An athletic store is running low on the season’s hot new T Shirt which are manufactured in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. The store places an order for 5000 pieces. The manufacturing company works with a freight forwarder to arrange transport from Ahmadabad Factory for the shipment of goods.
A trucking company arrives at the Ahmadabad Factory , loads the order along with orders from many other retailers into a 40 foot container which is bolted shut and fitted with high security seal. The container will not be opened until the container reaches the distribution warehouse in the destination country unless customs officials decide to open and inspect it.
The freight forwarder determines it is most economical to truck the container to nearest Inland Container Depot at Khodiyar, Ahmadabad. The freight forwarder has contracted with a Customs House agent for customs clearance and container shipping line, which must submit documentation about the shipment to Government Authorities in the exporting and importing countries. This “manifest data” includes information such as exact contents, the exporter, the importer and who is transporting the cargo
Now loaded onto a container ship, the container of T Shirts is bound for a discharge port on another continent far away.
A few days before the ship is scheduled to arrive at the destination port, the captain of the vessel provides a report to the government of the destination country that contains information about the ship, its crew and its cargo
Having received proper clearance to arrive at the port, the container vessel docks at a berth adjacent to large carrier that will be used to unload containers of cargo.
Many dockworkers – sometimes more than 100 per vessel – arrive to work at ships (for unloading container cargo). They include crane operators, Lashers, Clerks, Cargo equipment operators and Operations Supervisors, Managers.
Once cargo is unloaded Customs officials, armed with a careful evaluation of each containers documentation may select specific container for further inspection.
After payment of import duty, cargo is customs cleared. Once customs cleared container cargo is loaded on truck trailer or chassis. Now the container of T Shirts can be trucked to distribution centre. Containers are often transported by train when destination is a long distance from the port
The truck trailer arrives at import distribution centre located not too far from the port, where the container is opened and the orders by individual stores are separated and prepared for shipments. The next day, the athletic supply store receives its 5000 T Shirts of the season’s most popular athletics T shirt’s.
